biography

Anita Adelson

I am a native of Pennsylvania.  After graduating with a BS in art education at Pennsylvania State University , I began my art teaching career.  Upon earning my MA in art education   at  California State University Los Angeles l continued teaching art in California.  Retirement brought me to North Carolina where I am so pleased to have the time to immerse myself in my painting.

Artist statement

I enjoy being in the midst of nature; hiking and walking in the woods, on the beach and on mountain trails. Brilliant colors of autumn sparkle and skeletal trees of winter contrast with the sky. Cool crisp air beckons me into the woods to enjoy the movement of shadows and light that change with the seasons.  The newness of opening spring flowers brings an urgency to paint before they disappear and wilt. My travels have given me much inspiration for painting.

My paintings evoke varied moods and thoughts:  I remember the crunch of the leaves, the walks…. or the scents of the early morning sun in the landscape.  I would like the viewer to look beyond the boundaries of the frame to see the rest of the picture, to see what I remember, to enjoy the serenity that I felt.

When I paint in acrylic I let the brush strokes produce texture, or I will use a palette knife to give me an option for a more abstract feel. The fluidity and accidental happenings of watercolor are wonderful surprises. Combining ink and watercolor allows me to define the details with fine lines.
